Why is this indicator important?

In the third grade, the standardized Reading and Math CRCT are promotional tests. Students must pass these tests before moving to the fourth grade.


How are we doing in Hall County?

  • 3rd grade students in Gainesville City and Hall County schools scored at or above the state average in reading in 2007-08 and 2008-09.
  • 3rd grade students in Gainesville City scored at or above the state average in math in 2007-08 and 2008-09, while 3rd grade students in Hall County schools scored below the state average in math.


What does research tell us we can do to improve this indicator?


  • Address underlying causes of low performance, including poverty, class size, lack of resources and materials 
  • Improve testing, curricula, and teaching methods and techniques by reviewing test results and data by specific subgroups of students
  • Encourage mentoring and teamwork in the classroom to improve school achievement and test scores 
  • Promote research-based practices in teacher training and professional education opportunities
  • Encourage parent involvement in their child's education and in school activities
