Poverty Level and Household Income

Measures

• Percent of residents Age 60+ with income below the federal poverty level for their family size.
• The household income of persons over 65.

Why is this indicator important?

Seniors with low income are often severely strained due to financial and health problems.  Poverty among senior citizens is particularly devastating because many seniors under the poverty level live alone.  The effects of poverty can often be invisible to governments and organizations, especially when those effects include marginalization, discrimination, and shame.
