Eligible Children Enrolled in the Georgia Pre-Kindergarten Program
Measure
Number of eligible children enrolled in the Georgia Pre-K Program.
Why
is this indicator important?
We know that effective pre-school education can help make children ready
to learn the day they start school, and, more importantly, can help
close the enormous gap facing children in poverty.
Georgia's Pre-K Program was established in 1993 to provide Georgia's 4-year-old children with high-quality preschool experiences with the learning experiences they need to prepare for kindergarten.
Georgia's Pre-K Program is successfully preparing children for school by providing an opportunity for them to develop school readiness skills in an environment that encourages them to have fun while learning.
How are we doing in Hall County?
- Georgia Pre-K programs in Hall County are enrolling an increasing number of eligible 4-year-olds each year; however, the percent of children from low-income families enrolled continues to be below the state level.
What does research tell us we can do to improve this
indicator?
- Educate parents about the importance and benefits of quality early learning programs
- Maintain and expand access to quality preschool programs in a variety of settings
- Link families with available program slots to enroll their child in early learning and Pre-K programs
- Increase federal funding to expand early learning and Pre-K programs so children in underserved communities can attend
- Pre-K education should be aligned with the K-12 curriculum, taught by skilled teachers, and offered in safe environments
